WEST WARWICK—Starting next week, calls to the main West Warwick Police Station phone line will be greeted by an automated operator, says Chief. Col. Paul Villa.
A lot of departments are doing this now in the state, Villa said, and it’s a good way of cutting down routine phone traffic. Callers to the main number, 821-4323, will now have a variety of automated options instead of going directly to the dispatch.
“9-11 is still 9-11,” Villa said, “And if there is an emergency call [to the main line] you’re prompted right away to press 0 and you go right to dispatch.”
Without the automated system, dispatch spends a lot of time fielding calls that don’t relate to them in any way, Villa said.

Local EMT suspended

CHARLESTOWN - The Rhode Island Department of Health has officially suspended Joseph Tedeschi, an EMT working for Charlestown and South Kingstown EMS departments, after investigating allegations he illegally practiced and purchased medicine and medical supplies on several occasions.
Tedeschi’s suspension was ordered on Wednesday, Jan. 27 after the department of health received a complaint from the South Kingstown Police department regarding an internal investigation of Tedeschi that had led to evidence of wrongdoing in Charlestown two days prior.

EG Arts open house

The new art center offering classes in town, EG Arts, held an open house last weekend. classes are scheduled to start Feb. 15. Classes will run at $15 an hour, said artist Barbara Boylan, with a program of eight classes a month, which averages to about $120 a month.  Above, Ariel Rosario and D J Biber, both of East Greenwich , are practicing relief wood carving.
